The Iraqi uranium swap
WASHINGTON D.C. — The United States didn’t have authorization from the U.N. nuclear watchdog when it secretly shipped from Iraq uranium and highly radioactive material that could be used in so-called “dirty bombs,” U.N. officials said Wednesday.
When asked about the removal of 550 metric tons of “yellowcake,” the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney responded by saying, “what, we have given Iraq over 5,000,000 metric tonnes of depleted uranium over the past 5 years, what’s the big deal?”
